Niagara Health is moving to a modern three-site hospital system, and Welland Hospital is staying open as a cornerstone of it. Here's what's confirmed for our hospital: the renovations, the expanded services, and the long-term vision, plus an honest look at what's still being decided.

Niagara Health is transitioning to a three-site system, with hospitals in St. Catharines, Niagara Falls, and Welland. The new South Niagara Hospital in Niagara Falls is scheduled to open in summer 2028. Welland Hospital is not closing. It remains a cornerstone of the new system.

Older Niagara Health material suggested a summer 2026 construction start. The current schedule says spring 2027, with phased work leading up to 2028.
Approved. The province approves the near-term renovations and a planning grant for longer-term redevelopment.
Council decision. Welland council confirms its $17.8M contribution to South Niagara Hospital on February 10, and announces its funding strategy on March 12.
Procurement launched. Niagara Health opens contractor qualifications for the $55M Welland renovation. Planning and procurement come before construction.

Service transition. Complex-care beds and the 35-bed addictions program move to Welland, and South Niagara Hospital is scheduled to open that summer.
The province has approved a renovation of Welland Hospital to prepare it for its role in the new three-site system. The $55M project is in procurement now. Construction is expected to start in spring 2027 and continue in phases through 2028.
More single and double rooms. Fewer triple rooms, and four-bed rooms are eliminated.

The province has approved a planning grant for the Welland Hospital Redevelopment Project. This early-stage funding supports feasibility studies, design, and community consultation. Niagara Health describes the long-term vision as a "campus of care." The final design, full construction budget, and completion date for that larger redevelopment are not yet set.

The vision is real and the planning is funded. But the full shape of Welland Hospital's services after 2028 has not been finalized yet.
Some reports indicate current plans may not include every service the hospital offers today, for example acute care beds or an intensive care unit (ICU). Public consultation is planned to help shape the final decisions.
